Rui Lopes is a researcher at the Instituto de História Contemporânea, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and has a PhD in International History from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

He is the author of the book West Germany and the Portuguese Dictatorship, 1968–1974: Between Cold War and Colonialism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). He has published in The International History Review, Journal of Contemporary History, and Portuguese Studies.

His current research project concerns depictions of the Portuguese dictatorship and empire in international audiovisual fiction.
